Geraldton Iron Ore Alliance Geraldton Iron Ore Alliance

Public Charter

Our Role

The role of the Geraldton Iron Ore Alliance (GIOA) is simple:

“To create a public policy environment and foster positive stakeholder relations enabling members’ projects to have the ultimate capacity to succeed.”

There is enormous potential for the Mid West region of Western Australia to become the State’s second iron ore industry province that delivers substantial economic and social benefits in an environmentally sustainable manner.

Realising this potential will involve overcoming a number of impediments including those related to the Statutory Approval process, Government policy settings and the timely provision of infrastructure on a regional basis.

Mid West mining companies recognise the wisdom of dealing with some public policy issues on a regional industry-wide basis and have quickly recognised that in many instances a regional approach to resolving issues is required along with having a unified vehicle in dealings with Government at a political level.

Our Vision

To position GIOA members’ iron ore projects as a valued and sustainable industry delivering social, economic and environmental benefits to the Mid West and be acknowledged as a strong contributor to vocational education and training, and a catalyst for infrastructure development.

Our Objectives

The key objectives of the GIOA are:

  • To secure commitment from the State Government for the development of the Mid West iron ore industry
  • Achieve Government public policy settings that:

    • Provide for the expansion of the iron ore capacity of the Geraldton Port and associated rail infrastructure;

    • Facilitate the timely development of the Oakajee Port and associated rail and other infrastructure;

    • Proactively and positively address environmental requirements;

    • Facilitate the growth of the industry, particularly in the areas of infrastructure, environmental approvals and government regulation; and

    • Promote the economic diversity a Mid West iron ore province will deliver to the local region and State

  • Raise awareness of the GIOA’s and member companies commitment to make a meaningful contribution to vocational education and training including employment opportunities for local Mid West residents

  • Promote ongoing commitment to train and employ indigenous Australians

  • Work with member companies to identify and create opportunities to further the development of the industry

  • Enhance the standing and reputation of the industry and by doing so provide the industry with an opportunity to influence public policy and debate

  • Promote the industry in a way that demonstrates the industry’s and the region’s success are intrinsically interwoven

  • Communicate with a single voice wherever possible on issues affecting the iron ore industry in the Mid West region of WA

  • Promote points of common interest including - GIOA members as safe, profitable, innovative, environmentally and socially responsible, valued by the community and tuned to its needs and expectations.

Mining has a successful track record in delivering sustainable net environmental benefits for the Western Australian economy and a large number of local communities. In the Mid West region, there is strong support for the resources industry from Local Government, business and communities. These key factors will be critical to the achievement of the objectives outlined above.
